The award is based on annual philanthropic activities of local foundations, organizations and businesses. Gracia Slater, director of development for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), nominated Wachovia for the award.
"Wachovia is known for its dedication to community service and volunteer leadership in every community that the bank serves," Slater said. "Wachovia has had a lasting impact with its philanthropic support in Western North Carolina in education, health services, social services and minority affairs."
Since 1997, Wachovia has contributed more than $1 million for projects in Western North Carolina, including sponsorship of the Principal of the Year program and the Teacher of the Year Seminar at NCCAT.
"Education is the key to the success of individuals, the corporations in which they work and the communities in which they live," said John Civils, executive in charge of community and government affairs in the Carolinas for Wachovia. "Across the Southeast, Wachovia works with schools, chambers of commerce and education-related organizations to provide programs and services to help students."
The society also recognized new programs launched with Wachovia’s assistance. In 2000, Wachovia began working with Consumer Credit Counseling Services and the NAACP to assist low-income and minority residents.
