Wachovia Names Gwynne Whitley Head of Corporate Customer Service Excellence
22-year Wachovia veteran will focus on building customer loyalty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Wachovia announced today that Gwynne Whitley, a 22-year veteran of the organization, has been named director of Corporate Customer Service Excellence. After a short transition, Whitley will replace Beth McCague, who is moving to a new role with the company's Wealth Management division in Jacksonville, Fla.

"We have had an incredible turnaround in customer service during the past five years at Wachovia, and today we are a leader in our industry," said Ben Jenkins, head of the General Bank. "We are fully committed to building on this success and becoming the very best in service in our industry.

"As a result, we sought a leader who understands our company culture, our system, our goals and most important our customers. Gwynne has just the right combination of experience, expertise and skill to take on this critical role. We are confident that she will take our company-wide customer service efforts to the next level."

"Wachovia is already doing an excellent job satisfying our customers and have begun to focus more intensely on customer loyalty," Whitley said. "I look forward to expanding our success and working to show our customers that no other financial services company can provide them with the same level of excellent service."

For the past four years, Whitley has served as the Human Resources business partner director and as an operating committee member for Wachovia's General Bank. During that time, she has been instrumental in the overall success of the General Bank and the company. Whitley and her team also played a significant role in the success of the company's recent merger.

Whitley holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina and a master's in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She will serve as chair of the Urban League of the Central Carolinas for 2004.
