IMPROVING EDUCATION

With the foundation of a quality education, a child’s opportunities are without limits. In fact, education provides more opportunities for people at any age. That’s why improving educational opportunities for children and adults is a key priority for Wachovia.

Our education programs have positively influenced the lives of millions of children since they began in 1989. These programs encourage employees to volunteer in local schools and organizations as tutors, mentors, readers, speakers, lunch buddies, and room parents.

Reading First®

Reading First®, our signature education program, was developed in partnership with the Children’s Literacy Initiative in 1997. Every year, our employees read to children in primary education classrooms once a week for 20 weeks, then donate the books to the classrooms. Since its inception, Reading First®  has established over 16,000 partnerships with local elementary school classrooms. In partnership with Scholastic Inc., we donated 98,000 books to classroom libraries in 2005.

Teach For America

In this national partnership, not only has Wachovia made a financial commitment, but Wachovia employees are reaching out to support Teach For America corps members in their communities. In addition, Teach For America received $3 million from the proceeds of the 2003, 2004 and 2005 Wachovia Championship. Teacher Development and Support

The single greatest factor in improving student achievement is the quality of the teacher in the classroom.* To this end, we assist in the support and professional development of quality teachers.  Our Wachovia Teachers and Teaching Initiative provides funding to organizations that enhance teacher recruitment, development, support, and retention, with the goal of increasing student achievement.

Wachovia Student Experience

The Wachovia Student Experience is a resource kit that employees can use to engage middle school students (grades 6, 7 and 8) in discussions about careers and what it is like to work at Wachovia.  The kit can be used for in-classroom presentations, and also for in-office job shadowing.

Scholarships

Wachovia supports many college and university scholarship programs that focus on teacher preparation and provide underserved groups with opportunities for higher education.
