FINANCIAL LITERACYHelping people become better money managers is just the beginning of Wachovia’s efforts to improve financial literacy across our nation. We have developed several innovative financial education tools and programs that are delivered by non-profit partners to facilitate financial literacy classes, and in turn, ensure that lower-income consumers can access financial services. eCommunitiesfirst®Using the Internet in financial transactions can be daunting for anyone without computer knowledge. Add that to buying your first home or starting a small business, and it is easy to understand why some may feel overwhelmed. To encourage financial literacy in an ever-growing online marketplace, Wachovia created eCommunitiesfirst®. Through this program, Wachovia provides training and marketing materials to partner organizations who implement technology and financial literacy workshops in learning labs located in the communities Wachovia serves. The curriculum consists of six lessons – in both English and Spanish – covering basic PC and Internet skills and the practical application of these skills. Money SmartWachovia is the first major bank to partner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to offer the agency’s financial literacy program to people who need it most. The FDIC Money Smart curriculum helps adults enhance their money management skills, understand basic financial services and build financial confidence. The program consists of ten lessons – in both English and Spanish – and is delivered through a unique combination of technology, community partnerships and employee volunteers. An array of innovative training techniques is used to instruct participants, including live instructional satellite broadcasts, course materials, visual aids and 20 one-hour videos.
